Cigarette packets gifted from friends, lovers & strangers, hand made paper, tobacco
Before I moved to china, people were immediately concerned about the pollution and its effect on my health. I joked that my health would be unaffected, I have never smoked so it would be as though I had smoked for a year. Actually, my relationship with china is more complicated. I had considered the health implications it could pose to me but hadn’t considered the broader implications of living in one of the most populated places on earth. Coming from Australia, I found it jarring how much waste I could generate in a day. When water can’t be drunk from the tap, food and gifts are shrouded in packaging, waste easily accumulates. I became uncomfortably aware of my own excess. In joking about my year of smoking, I was faced with something more uncomfortable. Cigarettes will kill you. But tobacco erodes soil fertility, so that nothing else can grow.
